Bodega Bay is a working harbor town on the Sonoma Coast, 65 miles and about two hours north of San Francisco. Come to walk the 1.9-mile loop at Bodega Head, spend a day on the sand at Doran Beach, watch gray whales between December and May, and stand where Hitchcock filmed The Birds. Expect fishing boats, crab pots, and fog that lifts by midday.

Bodega Head — The Trail, Whale Season, and Sonoma Coast Beaches
Walk the 1.9-mile Bodega Head Nature Trail for the harbor mouth, the open Pacific, and the gray whale run. Southbound whales pass from November into mid-February. The northbound return, with mothers and calves, runs mid-February through May. The Sonoma Coast State Park beaches nearby are for walking, not swimming.

Summer is when the Russian River turns into a swim day under the redwoods. Johnson's Beach anchors Guerneville, Monte Rio holds the big public beach, and Steelhead to Sunset is the float we send people on. Sonoma Wine Country Weekend — Russian River, Dry Creek, Sonoma Valley
Shape a Sonoma wine weekend around one valley per day. Russian River Valley pours cool-climate Pinot and Chardonnay under fog and redwood edges. Dry Creek is Zin and picnic lawns. Sonoma Valley runs Highway 12 from the Plaza through Glen Ellen and Kenwood. Book tastings by Wednesday, and put a designated driver in the plan before the first glass.

Which part of Sonoma County should I stay in?
Bodega Bay for the coast and the shortest drive from San Francisco; the Russian River for redwoods, river beaches, and cabin towns; Healdsburg or Sonoma Valley for wineries and walkable plazas. All three are within about an hour of each other, so many guests split a week between two.
How far is the coast from wine country?
Healdsburg to Bodega Bay is roughly an hour through the redwoods and river towns. Sonoma to Bodega Bay is about an hour and a quarter. A coast morning and a vineyard afternoon in the same day is realistic.
Are your Sonoma County homes dog friendly?
