Johnson's Beach

Johnson's Beach sits a few blocks off Main Street in Guerneville, at 16215 First Street, with the public approach down Church Street. This private beach is the in-town swim people picture for Russian River summer. Redwoods shade the gravel bar, and a seasonal dam quiets the current into a broad swimming pool.

Day visitors pay $10 per car. The lot runs 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Rentals open at 10 a.m. and are due back at 5 p.m. The snack shack serves from 11 a.m., with beer and wine until 6 p.m. Outside alcohol stays in the car. The dam calms the water inside the swim area, but drop-offs and current wait just outside it, so keep kids inside arm's reach.

Monte Rio Beach

Monte Rio Beach is the largest public beach on the lower Russian River, west of Guerneville on Bohemian Highway. The upper lot and beach stay open all year. The lower lot closes after summer and reopens in spring. Alcohol and amplified sound are not allowed.

From Memorial Day through Labor Day you can rent a canoe, kayak, or paddle board. A Wheeleez beach wheelchair is free to reserve at 707-865-2487 and rolls from the lot into shallow water. West of the bridge, Sandy Beach handles fly-fishing and small-boat access. The district asks you not to swim west of the bridge. Dutch Bill Beach sits across the river with Park and Ride parking nearby on Main Street.

Steelhead Beach Regional Park

Steelhead Beach Regional Park sits at 9000 River Road in Forestville. Hours run 7 a.m. to sunset. Summer parking is $12 per vehicle, $8 the rest of the year, or free for Regional Parks members. Flush toilets and picnic tables sit by the lot.

Launch a canoe, kayak, or paddle board year-round, or rent a tube on site through RussianRiverTubes.com. In summer the park loans free life vests on the beach. A short set of trails makes a loop of nearly a mile through cottonwoods and maples along the bank. Alcohol is banned from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, and fires stay off the sand. Arrive early on summer weekends. When the lot fills, the entrance closes.

Sunset Beach and smaller access points

Sunset Beach River Park at 11403 River Road is the take-out Regional Parks recommends for the Steelhead float. Hours run from 7 a.m. to thirty minutes before sunset. Parking matches Steelhead. A short trail drops to a rocky beach toward the Hacienda Bridge. Portable toilets sit near the lot, and free loaner life vests show up in summer. The lot closes when full, and street parking is not available.

Guerneville River Park at 13811 Highway 116 is the free in-town launch on the south bank, with flush toilets, picnic sites, and a non-motorized boat launch. Alcohol is prohibited year-round.

Floats and kayaks

Regional Parks recommends Steelhead Beach to Sunset Beach, about two river miles through Forestville and roughly four and a half hours on the water. Summer current often creeps at about half a mile per hour, so start early. Children younger than twelve must wear a life jacket, and free loaners sit at both parks in summer. Bring a river-rated tube, not a pool float. Pack water and a trash bag, and take your tube home.

On summer weekends the Regional Parks River Shuttle runs from El Molino High School in Forestville to both beaches. Johnson's and Monte Rio rent canoes and kayaks in their own seasons for shorter paddles from town. Burke's Canoe Trips puts in one mile north of Forestville and finishes in Guerneville on a ten-mile self-guided run with a return shuttle. Call ahead to reserve. Never dive into the river. Walk in and keep life jackets on.

When is the river swimmable?

Summer is the swimming season. Temporary dams raise the water near Guerneville, and Regional Parks runs its river-safety program from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Outside that window the gravel bars still look inviting, but cold water, current, and submerged wood get less forgiving.

Bookmark USGS gauge 11467000, Russian River at Hacienda Bridge near Guerneville, and read the discharge in cubic feet per second. Late summer often sits in the low hundreds. Winter storms push it into the thousands. No agency posts a safe-to-swim number. If the river is high, brown, or rising after rain, stay on the bank.

Sonoma County Department of Health Services samples beaches for bacteria in summer and posts harmful algae guidance for cyanobacteria. Call the Beach Sampling Hotline at 707-565-6552, read the signs, and skip water that looks foamy, scummy, paint-thick, or oddly colored. Do not drink river water. Rinse kids and dogs after river play.

River safety

Treat the Russian River as moving water, even when a summer dam makes Johnson's look still. Put a life jacket on every child before they leave the sand. Lifeguards are not on duty at Steelhead or Sunset.

Alcohol and current are a bad mix. County beaches ban open containers through the summer holiday window, and Johnson's does not allow outside alcohol on its beach. Cold water early in the season steals heat fast. Snags, rocks, and drop-offs hide under the surface. Never dive or jump from bridges, banks, or dams. Walk in. Keep non-swimmers inside arm's reach. Stay off the seasonal dams and fish ladders.

Dogs, parking, and bathrooms

Dog rules change beach by beach. Johnson's bans pets on the sand. Monte Rio sends leashed dogs to Sandy Beach west of the bridge. Steelhead and Sunset allow leashed dogs, including in the water.

Johnson's day parking is $10. Steelhead and Sunset charge $12 in summer and close when full. Guerneville River Park is free. Monte Rio keeps the upper lot open year-round. Steelhead has flush toilets. Sunset uses portable toilets. Cell service fades along River Road, so download maps before you leave house wifi.
