Things to Do in Cazadero, California

In short

Know before you go

The house is the town
There is no plaza and no Main Street dinner list. You came for the redwoods and the creek. Downtown is a general store and, on Fridays in season, a bakery.
Our houses are a drive from the store
The five homes we manage sit on Sunrise Mountain, Magic Mountain, Wildwood, and Cazadero Highway. None of them walk to the sandwich counter. Read the listing if you need to be near the store without a car.
Fill up before you climb
Cazadero has no supermarket and no gas station. Shop and fuel in Guerneville, then take Cazadero Highway up the canyon.
These canyons go dry by August
Cook on the grill that came with the house. Stay with it. Drown the coals before you go back inside.

Things to Do in Cazadero, California

Cazadero Highway and Austin Creek

This is the canyon you booked. The road follows Austin Creek under the redwoods, and the point of the day is often the deck. When you want to leave the trees, the village down the hill is Duncans Mills, not a plaza.

Duncans Mills

A short drive down the canyon lands you in a historic railroad village on Highway 116. Walk the shops, get a coffee, and sit if the gardens are open. This is the stretch-your-legs stop when the house has been enough trees for one morning.

Shade at noon, dry grass by August

The canopy keeps the morning cool. By afternoon the ridges above the creek can still run hot. Carry water if you walk the road.

Winter drops trees on Cazadero Highway after a big storm. Check the road before you leave, and give yourself daylight for the last miles.

When the canyon is enough

We come down for ice and a sandwich, then turn around. Friday in summer we stay for pizza and the band. If the house needs a village, we drop to Duncans Mills and walk the block.

From our team

  • The creek walks raccoons right up the stairs. Cans stay inside. Then the deck is yours and the water is the only noise.
  • Raymond's is a Friday, May through September. Don't plan Saturday breakfast there.
  • Download the map before you leave Guerneville. The highway goes quiet on a phone.
